Interesting facts about Coorg

Coorg, also known as the Scotland of India, is ideal for a tranquil green escape spot in Karnataka. Filled with lush green trees and misty skies, it offers some beautiful places to visit. Coorg is regarded as an ideal summer vacation spot to escape the scorching heat of the summer and the bustling crowds of popular tourist destination.



1.Coffee: One of the few reasons to be grateful for British rule in India. Coorg is the coffee capital of India and has an abundance of coffee plantations. Coorg coffee is famous for its blue colour, clear beans and flavourful taste. During the season, the whole place has the refreshing smell of a coffee shop.



2. Honey: Virajpet or Virajpete is one of the main towns in Kodagu. This calm and sleepy town is one of the largest producers of delicious honey in Asia. Do not forget to taste the authentic ‘Virajpet Honey’. A cool place to see here is the St. Anne’s Church which is 220 years old.


3. Kodavas: The Kodavas have been the natives of Kodagu from a long time. They are the warriors and agricultarilists who guard their land and it is the major community in the district till date. They speak ‘Kodava takk’ (Kodava language) which is only known to the people of the region. They also have a traditional attire ‘Kuppasathatti’ which is very unique.



4. Tibetan settlements: You will be surprised to know that this place has the biggest Tibetan settlements in India with the Namdroling Monastery or the Golden Temple, located 30 km away from the capital Madikeri. Around 70,000 Tibetans are said to be living in and around the towns of Bylakuppe.



5. Puthari festival: Puthari festival is the harvest festival celebrated in Coorg. ‘Puthari’ literally means ‘new rice’. It is celebrated at the end of November or the start of December. It features a lot of song and dance celebrations and is a memorable experience for tourists.
